Below is just a couple of comments on some species. We see such a wide range it is not possible to list them all here. Our picture gallery shows some of the more unusual animals we treat. Rob Reynolds holds a Royal College Certificate in Zoological Medicine and is happy to see all exotic animals. As well as zoo work and referral work we treat numerous unusual animals kept privately. These animals range from ferrets to tapirs and coatimundis to bearded dragons, pythons, birds and tortoises. Reptile medicine and surgery is an expanding field. Hysterectomies on tortoises and lizards are now common. Routine spaying of green iguanas is an option owners might like to discuss with Rob. Most reptiles need regular worming and a faecal sample examined under the microscope will show parasites before they become a problem, allowing for appropriate ‘deworming’ when necessary. We have several vivaria for hospitalised reptiles. Our vivaria are heated and have spot lights and ultra violet lighting. Good husbandry is vital if these sensitive species are to do well under treatment. We have good facilites for diagnostic purposes including, ultra sound, endoscopy and x-rays. FerretsThe majority of ferrets are no longer working animals with short lives but delicate pets that require sophisticated treatment. For instance, micro-surgery to remove adrenal gland tumours. TortoisesTortoises are long-lived and characterful pets. Many have now been family members for decades and we feel that they should be treated with up-to-date knowledge and equipment. The bony shell makes examination and diagnosis difficult and we frequently use x-rays, ultrasound and our range of rigid and flexible endoscopes to look inside. |
